Luke A is a pianist and teacher who focuses on culturally unique and relevant music. Originally from Silverdale, Washington, Luke began as a jazz pianist before falling in love with the classical tradition. While in high school, he gave his debut performance with the Bremerton Symphony Orchestra as soloist in Delius’ Piano Concerto, which soulfully combines soundscapes of the Old and New Worlds.
He studied piano performance at Western Washington University with Milica Jelača Jovanović and Jeffrey Gilliam, in addition to earning a degree in cognitive psychology. During his undergraduate studies, Luke won the Virginia Glover Competition, in addition to being designated a Pride Foundation Scholar for his excellence as a performer and teacher. During this time, he also served as Music Director of St. James Presbyterian Church in Bellingham, WA. From 2022 to 2024, he earned a Master’s Degree in Piano Performance at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, studying under Brian Connelly. He plays orchestral keyboard with the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra in addition to his solo and collaborative work in Houston.
Luke always seeks to imbue personal warmth and vulnerability in his performances, and to develop the same qualities in his students – whether they have a jazz, Classical, pop, or composition focus, he is committed to helping them accomplish their artistic goals.
