PRESTIGIOUS HOUSTON-BASED ACADEMY CONTINUES TO EXPAND & CELEBRATE 10 YEARS OF OFFERING ITS INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS TO STUDENTS OF ALL LEVELS

Houston Heights – Vivaldi

HOUSTON – March 30, 2023 Vivaldi Music Academy, the largest music school in Texas and the fastest growing in the nation, today announced the grand opening of their fifth Houston-Area location in the Heights. Vivaldi’s newest academy will open April 10, 2023 at 1009 Yale Street, Houston 77008. Additionally, the much-lauded music school will celebrate ten years of bringing professional instruction to music lovers of all ages.

For ten years, Vivaldi Music Academy has provided not only music lessons to its students, but also a space where they can develop confidence and flex their creativity. Whether the piano, violin, and viola, or the flute, guitar, drums, and cello, students have enjoyed a combination of top-notch music education along with enthusiastic guidance from the world-class staff. The academy also offers instruction in voice.

This fifth and newest location boasts 3,800 square footage, 10 music rooms, and upright pianos – all in the heart of the popular Houston Heights. Students are invited to take advantage of the professionally apportioned venue by signing up for either private or group instruction.

“We are looking forward to expanding our programs and opportunities to the Heights community,” said Zeljko Pavlovic, Founder and CEO of Vivaldi Music Academy. “As we commemorate ten years, we are thankful for all our students, their families, and our faculty and staff for their continued support. We look forward to another ten years!”

Pavlovic, a critically acclaimed violinist, opened the first Vivaldi Music Academy location in Houston’s historic West University neighborhood in 2013. As the academy continues its expansion, more students throughout the area will be able to take advantage of exceptional musical learning in a supportive and state-of-the-art environment.

Additionally, academy students will have the opportunity to perform with Vivaldi as they make their historic performance debut in the classical music capital of the world – Vienna – at Brahms Hall as well as in Salzburg at the famous Marble Hall.

How to Learn New Music on Your Own

Getting the music from the page into your brain and out through your instrument or voice is all about processes. In this post, we’ll explore some of those processes, along with strategies for starting a new piece.

The first part of making music is internalizing the piece as a concept. Perhaps you know every song from Moana, or have a favorite song that gets stuck in your head. Listening is a really great way to get a piece of music into your imagination.

When listening, pay attention to any repeated material. Does the song have multiple verses with the same melody? Does the opening material come back at the end of the piece? Also take note if there are any moments that seem uniquely different from the rest of the piece.

Of course, playing a piece only by hearing it is a lot more complicated than it might seem. To play the piece accurately, you have to know precisely how it goes, rather than simply getting close. This is where your music reading skills really come into play, because your sheet music can tell you exactly what is happening as you listen. Scan your music. Are there any notes, words, or symbols that you don’t understand?

As you scan, here are some things to look for:

  • Get a pencil and circle the key signature, and any other flats, sharps, or naturals in the piece. Remember that flats or sharps at the beginning of a piece apply to the entire piece!
  • Understand the time signature. It looks like a fraction at the beginning of the piece (¾ in the example below). Remember that the top number tells you how many beats are in each measure (3), and the bottom number tells you what kind of note to count (4 represents the quarter note).

  • Look for any rhythmic patterns that happen throughout the piece. Try tapping the pattern with the recording.
  • Know the letter name for each note. Pay special attention to the first note of the piece or passage, notes approached by a skip, and notes following a change of hand position. Depending on your instrument, there may be finger numbers or other technical indications to guide you. Try to imagine the physical process of playing that note or passage on your instrument. For pianists, which finger plays each note?
  • If there are chords (two or more notes played at the same time), practice each chord by itself. Make sure you know each note in the chord, and are comfortable playing the chord. This process makes it easier to play the chords in the context of the piece or passage.
  • If there’s a melody that is repeated during the piece, look for it in your sheet music. Is it exactly the same, or are there small changes? Then look at the contrasting material.

Now you’re ready to try playing the piece! As you work through the content, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Work in small, meaningful sections. Instead of just playing from the beginning to the end (or until you crash), work on just one section until you’re comfortable with it. Then move on and learn the next one.
  • Set a clear goal for each section (for instance, to learn the notes and rhythms, to play an appropriate dynamic, to play more stylistically, to shift hand position correctly).
  • Let your tempo be slow and steady at first, so you have time to process all of the information and to perform the technique correctly.
  • After you’ve played through each section a few times, find which parts are the most difficult and focus on them. Is there anything that doesn’t sound right? Make sure you’re reading the notes correctly (including key signature and accidentals), and are using correct technique (pianists, check hand position). If the rhythm sounds off, count out the note values, and compare to the recording.
  • If you get stuck, move on to something else (musical or otherwise) and come back to the problem later. If you’re tired, hungry or thirsty, feeling unwell, or worried about something else, take care of your needs and practice later. If you’re still stuck, ask your teacher to help you.
  • Listen to the recording between practice sessions. This helps you hear how each section fits into the piece as a whole. Listening can also inspire your own creativity as you make artistic decisions about the piece.

Learning new music is an important part of your musical and personal development. Being proactive in this process makes you a more agile learner, and helps you take your lessons to the next level. By learning on your own, you are more prepared for your lessons, allowing you and your teacher to work faster and more effectively in preparing your music for performance. As your level of playing advances, your work will become increasingly independent, with your teacher helping to fine-tune your technical fluency and musical interpretation, and providing direction for your work. You can also use your skills to explore different kinds of music according to your personal interests.

Keep playing, listening, and learning!

Vivaldi Music Academy is one of Houston’s 100 Fastest Growing Companies

We have so much to celebrate this month – a new location, our 5th birthday AND being named Houston Business Journal’s 100 Fastest growing companies in Houston! Thank you to all of our Vivaldi families and friends for your continuous support and for DREAMING BIG with us!

The back to school season can be hectic. Sometimes simply getting back into the swing of things takes some preparation. Here are some easy tips to ease the transition!

Lock down your schedule

Most kids respond well to consistent schedules, so use a calendar to ensure everyone know what activities are expected each day. This includes both lessons and practice times! Also consider including a rewards system that will help make the connection from consistent practicing and hard work to beautiful musical results.

Set realistic expectations for practicing

Make sure everyone is on the same page! Younger children may need shorter practice times compared to older children. Also, if your child is overtired from school and other activities, try to reschedule a time when they are well-rested and enthusiastic for learning music.

Stay organized

Come to music lessons with all the essentials! If your child is especially forgetful, consider creating a checklist and posting it on the door.

Befriend your child’s music teacher

You are more than welcome to sit in on at least the first few lessons, which will help ease anxiety and also allows you to get a feel for their teaching style. Communication is key for everyone!

Don’t forget the practice journal

A practice journal can be an incredibly valuable tool, when both student and teacher are using it effectively. Sit down with your child and review the journal each week.

Vivaldi Music Academy Named as an Inc. 5000 & Houston Business Journal Fastest Growing Company Amidst New Location Opening

Houston, Texas,Sept 5th – The Vivaldi Music Academy team is thrilled to share news of the academy’s successes as it continues to grow in order to share the benefits of music with a wider community. In August, Vivaldi Music Academy was named as one of Inc. 5000’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies in America, and was noted as a finalist for Houston Business Journal’s 2018 Fast 100 Awards. Also, last month, Vivaldi Music Academy opened its third location.

On August 15th, Inc. 5000 released their annual report citing the top growing companies throughout the nation. Vivaldi Music Academy joined the ranks at position 1669, with 275% growth.

On September 7th, Vivaldi Music Academy will find out its standing within the Houston business community at Houston Business Journal’s 2018 Fast 100 event, where the final ranking of the 100 qualifiers will be announced. All the finalists are private companies based in Houston that have shown phenomenal growth from 2015 to 2017.

“I’m so proud of Vivaldi Music Academy, and the team we’ve built,” noted Owner and Director Zeljko Pavlovic. “Of course, it’s exhilarating to be honored for our business acumen, but our growth means so much more than numbers. For each location we open, and for each teacher we hire, we’re able to connect with a totally new group of students. That’s always our goal.”

As the Vivaldi Music Academy team learned of the company’s inclusion in both the Inc. 5000 and Houston Business Journal lists, they were also preparing for the opening of the school’s third location.

“Our third location delivers the same high-quality education that our students have come to expect. We’re continuing our proven curricula of private lessons, group voice lessons, strings ensemble, and our very own early-childhood music program – Vivaldi Seasons,” noted Pavlovic.

The Memorial facility, at 9311B Katy Freeway in the Echo Lane Shopping Center, has the capacity to enroll 1000 students. Fifteen new teachers began on August 1st, and the successful opening was celebrated with a ribbon cutting event on August 25th. Faculty, staff, students, and friends gathered to enjoy lunch, cupcakes, face painting, and a photo booth.

Pavlovic, who has been featured as one of Houston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40, shared the secret to the company’s growth, “It’s all about passion, and while it may start from the top, it’s a quality we look for in every one of our teachers and staff. These are people who are driven to share a love for the art of music, and our students feel it, and develop their own passion.”

That passion has led to numerous student performances far beyond the Houston metropolitan area. Vivaldi Music Academy students have performed in New York City’s renowned Carnegie Hall twice, the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and Santa Maria della Pieta in Venice, Italy. Vivaldi Music Academy students spent three years performing with The Piano Guys at the Revention Music Center in downtown Houston. This fall, the school plans to announce an exciting new venue for an upcoming recital in July 2019.

In addition to the many performances featuring Vivaldi Music Academy students, the school has garnered spotlight on TLC’s The Little Couple, and KHOU11’s Cadillac-sponsored Shaping Houston series.

Interested parties can find out more by contacting Zeljko Pavlovic at info@vivaldimusicacademy.com, or by visiting www.vivaldimusicacademy.com.

Among other festivities, students once again have the opportunity to perform at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall – this time with a coda: a second performance designed to let even more students and their families experience the thrill of performing in this hallowed venue on July 5th and July 6th.

One-hundred-twenty-seven years ago this May, and just before his own 51st birthday, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky conducted at the grand opening of Carnegie Hall. According to Director Zeljko Pavlovic, “It’s one thing to tell students that Tchaikovsky performed there. It’s quite another to have them stand in the same building and look out into the same venue. It could be the inspiration that leads a student to bigger things.” Dream Big and Play at Carnegie Hall! We’re excited for our students upcoming performances in New York City!
