Vivaldi Music Academy offers music lessons during the summer

It’s Summer Recital Time!
Houston Baptist University – Belin Chapel

There are many benefits for participating in a recital including:

1)   Giving students something to work towards (motivation to practice!)
2)   Performance experience
3)   Inspiration from watching more advanced performers
4)   A feeling of pride and accomplishment

We are looking forward to seeing our students showcase their musical talents at the Summer Recitals on June 3rd, June 10th and June 17th. An email with recital FAQs and sign up link was emailed to all students on May 3rd – please be sure to read through the information thoroughly to ensure a smooth recital day experience. If you have any questions, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help you!

DON’T FORGET – THE ACADEMY WILL BE CLOSED FOR MEMORIAL DAY, MONDAY MAY 29th!

We know many of you have summer plans and we hope you have tons of cool adventures! Since Vivaldi Music Academy is open year-round, it’s a good idea to start thinking about summer now!

Q. “How do lessons work in the summer?”
A. Vivaldi Music Academy is open year-round, and we do not close in the summer.

Q. “Will there be space available in the fall?”
A. We actually grow in enrollment during the summer months! Some students withdraw, but we are getting a huge influx of new students for the summer and majority continue into the fall.

Q. “How full is the Academy?”
A. As of today, we have 1400 students between our two locations and we are at capacity between the hours of 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. These are prime-time spots!

Q. “If I withdraw for the summer, can I keep my spot for the fall?”
A. Lessons are first come, first serve so if students withdraw for the summer, we cannot guarantee that you will have a spot in the fall, as we will open the spot to new students.

The big questions for all parents and
students to consider are:

Do you want lessons with your teacher in the same time slot for the fall?
Do you want to keep your Musical Ladder System level for the fall?
If the answers are YES, there are TWO WAYS to keep your spot – please talk to the front desk so we can help you!

Student of the Month: Addison C.!

  1. What school do you currently attend?
    • Lovett Elementary, 5th Grade
  2. What do you like most about playing violin?
    • How much I have been able to improve in the last few years. I started a bit later than everyone else in my school since I began learning on a wind instrument before switching to violin. I was struggling to keep up at first but over the last couple of years I have made great strides and have been playing in the top orchestra at school.
  3. When did you start taking violin lessons?
    • I started in 2nd grade
  4. What advice do you have for those who would like to take violin lessons?
    • Listen to you instructors. They can teach you techniques and music pieces that will make you a top player.
  5. Tell us about auditioning for All City Orchestra.
    • I rode a bus to a different school. There was a judge behind a curtain so he or she could not see me or any of the students auditioning. We, of course, could not see the judge either. They did that so only the way we played would count. Nothing about how we looked or whether the judge knew one of us personally would come into play. They gave us three pieces to learn 10 days ahead of the audition. They were harder pieces than I usually play. I practiced a great deal for the 10 days I had.
    • There were students from all over HISD and even some homeschoolers auditioning. They gave us all codes so they would not use our name when calling us so the judge would not know the name of the person on the other side of the curtain. I played the songs I had practiced intensely for the last week and a half. The next week, I went to my after school practice like I do every week. My orchestra teacher had posted the list on the wall. I saw my name highlighted and my teacher made an announcement about all who made it into the All City Orchestra!
  6. When you found out you were selected, how did you feel?
    • I felt great for accomplishing something with all of that practice. It was hard to concentrate for after school practice that day because I was so happy. I cannot wait until spring when we start practicing as an All City Orchestra.

Matthew Huntington Fisk attends St. Anne Catholic School and is in the first grade. Matthew began piano lessons at the age of three.

I like playing the piano because when I move my fingers across the keys it feels like home. My favorite artist are Beethoven, John Legend and Michael Jackson. My advice for those who want to take piano lessons is to practice, practice, practice and then you will take fun trips to Carnegie Hall and Italy! I enjoyed playing at Carnegie Hall and Vivaldi Church because I was able to play in halls so many famous people played in before me.

Musical Journeys: Bonnie’s Path to Success

It’s never too late to start playing violin! Vivaldi Music Academy violin teacher, Bonnie Diggs, started her incredible musical journey around age 13 when her grandparents gifted her family with a violin. Most professional violinists begin at a much younger age however Bonnie’s curiosity and love for learning led her to a professional level in an incredible few years. At age 14 she taught herself the basics of how to play the violin and worked through the Essential Elements for Strings book on her own.

As she progressed, she realized private violin lessons would bring her playing abilities to the next level. After 6 months of lessons, her teacher suggested that she audition for the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra (GNOYO). Much to her surprise, she ended up in their top orchestra! Before she could take her place in GNOYO, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina forced Bonnie’s family to move to Florida.

In September of 2005, Bonnie received a letter from GNOYO informing her they were rebuilding the orchestra and invited her to rejoin them! She spent hours practicing every day and by December 2005, Bonnie had conquered multiple songs. After her first concert she was inspired to dedicate her time to mastering the violin. When the famous violinist Midori was not able to make it to a rehearsal Bonnie stepped in to play the soloist’s Mendelssohn violin concerto on short notice – an amazing feat! As she auditioned for three universities to continue her studies, Bonnie received a full scholarship to each university. Bonnie chose to attend Loyola University and for the first two years she was principal second violinist. She pushed herself to practice more until she became concertmistress!

Bonnie loves to mentor beginners as well as teen and adult students who pursue the violin as it reminds her of the age at which she started playing. She encourages her students to never shy away from performing. She believes music teaches students to build character, confidence, and self-esteem, and looks forward to being a part of your very own journey on the violin!

Back to School Tips for your Child's Music Education

the back to school season can be hectic! Sometimes simply getting back into the swing of things takes some preparation. Here are some easy tips to ease the transition:

Lock down your schedule
Most kids respond well to consistent schedules, so use a calendar to ensure everyone knows what activities are expected each day. This includes both lessons and practice times! Also, consider including a reward system to help make the connection to consistent practicing and hard work.

Set expectations for practicing
Make sure everyone is on the same page!

Stay organized
Come to music lessons with all the essentials! If your child is especially forgetful, consider creating a checklist and posting it on the door.

Befriend your child’s music teacher
Our teachers encourage parents to sit in on at least the few lessons, which will help ease the anxiety and also allows you to get a feel for their teaching style. Communication is key, for everyone involved!

Don’t forget the practice journal
A practice journal can be an incredibly valuable tool, when both student and teacher are using it effectively. Sit down with your child and review the journal each week.

Congratulations to our faculty members on their recent promotions!

Matthew Gutwald (Director of Piano Pedagogy) and Sam Perez (Director of Guitar Studies) share their philosophies on music education and why they enjoy teaching at Vivaldi Music Academy.

Matthew Gutwald
DIRECTOR OF PIANO PEDAGOGY

On the first day of school, my 3rd grade teacher would play piano for our class to wake us up. I remember getting home from school that same and telling my parents that I wanted to learn how to play the piano. My grandparents gifted me the family piano, and I have not stopped playing since. Lessons and practice have taken me so many places I never thought I would get to experience. When I was given the privilege to perform at Carnegie Hall, I had truly achieved my dreams.

I absolutely love teaching piano because it is such a versatile instrument. Students are able to explore, experiment, create, and imagine infinite styles, sounds, and melodies. My philosophy for teaching piano is to build strong, well rounded fundamentals and habits that can be used universally for any genre of music that interest the students. Being trained as a classical pianist, I strive to expose my students and their families to music that they may not have heard, ranging from Bach to Prokofiev. My favorite thing about this job is the fact that every lesson is different. I get to be outrageous and make people laugh while they learn, build rapport, and see people grow and progress into artistic musicians.

Matt_WebPic600
Sam600

Sam Perez
DIRECTOR OF GUITAR STUDIES

My relationship with guitar began with my wonderful parents. When I was 8 years old my parents surprised me with a guitar from a Sears catalog. From that day on, my life has been an amazing adventure taking me to places I never thought possible. My perspective as a teacher is that the guitar is a very unique instrument, it is challenging and rewarding at the same time. Playing the guitar teaches children to think differently. I enjoy teaching kids to play the “classical” way because there are many developmental benefits. While harvesting fine motor skills, my students have learned to play anything from Taylor Swift to Bach. I emphasize sustainable playing by teaching students and parents that having healthy habits in our musical education will positively influence the rest of our lives. My favorite thing about my job is seeing people young and old grow in confidence as their skills develop on a weekly basis.

VIVALDI GOES TO VENICE

Congratulations to our students and faculty on their Venetian debut!

Students and faculty arrived on June 23rd for a recital of a lifetime by water bus (vaporetto), water taxi, train and on foot through the canals and streets of Venice at the Santa Maria della Pieta (Vivaldi’s church). The Pieta hosted a gathering of family and friends to celebrate an early evening of music, music education and our namesake Antonio Vivaldi. Tourists and locals joined the audience to enjoy our students’ performances along with faculty performances that included pieces from an Italian favorite, Cinema Paradiso.

Alex in Venice
Vivaldi’s Church – performance

Vivaldi, the famous Venetian composer and master of violin, wrote countless compositions during his time as a music educator at the Santa Maria della Pieta from 1703-1740. While rising to the rank of concertmaster, Vivaldi directed the children’s choir and all-girls orchestra through the church’s orphanage at the time, the Ospedale della Pieta. Established in the fourteenth century, the Ospedale now operates as the Instituto Provinciale Per L’Infanzia, a charitable institution that provides education and assists children and mothers in need. All proceeds from our recital benefited this charity for children and women.

Vivaldi Goes to Venice!

We are excited for our Italian debut in the beautiful city of Venice on June 23rd! All proceeds from our recital will benefit this charity for children and women.

Summer Music Lessons - Reserve your prime time spot for the fall today!

  1. We LOVE our summer lessons. There are many advantages to taking summer music lessons, and here are just a few:
  2. Fun and Motivating – Summer is the perfect time to break from the routine and help students learn music of their choice whether it’s a song they heard on the radio or a challenging classical piece.
  3. Greater Focus– Without the worries of homework, sports games and practices, and other school-time activities, students can devote time and attention to their summer music lessons and practice. Better focus leads to better practice!
  4.  Time for Something New – Many of our students show interest in learning an additional instrument during the school year. Summer is the best time to try out a new instrument or two!
  5. No Backtracking – When students take a full summer break from their instruments, it only means one thing – time to backtrack in the Fall! Everyone knows that saying, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” This is true in all disciplines including learning how to play an instrument. Our students use their summer music lessons to keep making progress.
